As the Fifth Floor begins to educate ourselves about the 2011 activism project, SAFE: Schools Are For Everyone, we have been thinking about how to expand our project to include the entire school community. Toward that goal, the Activism Committee has initiated Manhattan Country School’s participation in No Name-Calling Week, “an annual week of educational activities aimed at ending name-calling of all kinds and providing schools with the tools and inspiration to launch an ongoing dialogue about ways to eliminate bullying in their communities”.
From January 24-28, students from the Fifth Floor will visit different classrooms and lead activities and discussion about name calling and its effects. They will focus on providing strategies for kids to use to stand up for themselves and to help others, moving from bystander to ally.
MCS students will be invited to join in the fight against bullying by signing a public pledge that will be displayed in the courtyard. We hope that this week will be a learning experience for the community and heighten awareness of the impact of our words.
